Installation Instructions

1. On the Select Journal Style page, find the Tabula Rasa Plain layout and click "Apply theme". Also choose: 1 Column (no sidebar), 2 Column (sidebar on left) or 2 Column (sidebar on right) by clicking the "Apply layout" button for whichever page setup you want.

2. Next, go to the Customize Journal Style Presentation page. Under Additional Options, set User Interaction Links to "text only". Entry Management Links and Comment Management Links can be set to either icons or text, whichever you prefer.

3. Setting up Modules: In order to display properly, the Navigation module needs to be set as the first item in Group One for all page setups.

One Column: All other modules should be assigned to Group Two, ie, only the Navigation module should be in Group One.
Two Column Left/Two Column Right: Set the other modules as you like in Group One or Two and save changes.

4. Next, click on the "Custom CSS" link on the left side to go to the Custom CSS page: Deselect the ticky in "Use layout's stylesheet(s)", and copy and paste from the text box below into the Custom CSS box. Save changes, and you're done.

Just one question... (how) would I be able to add a tag list to the sidebar? I operate off of tags a lot in my own journal. I wouldn't really need them all, but at least the most used tags or something.

Yes, that's totally possible! Looking at your layout, it's basically the same set up as you have now, it's just that Navigation has to be set as the first item in Group One. Any other modules can be included afterwards as usual, but starting with item 2. So, if you wanted to keep your sidebar the way you have it now, in Group One you'd have: Navigation item 1, Profile item 2, Calendar item 3, Syndicate item 4, Tags item 5, Page summary item 6. Group Two can be whatever modules you want in any order. Hope that makes sense!

Ooh, I like this a lot. Is there an easy way to get the poster's name under the icon on the Reading page or is that a major style change? (It's the one style thing I can't live without, but it's pretty rare in DW styles.)

Sidenote: it's rare in DW styles because the usernames are much longer (up to 25 characters long), so it can end up looking awkward.

Nabbed this layout, thank you. I've had DW for a while, but don't use, it, becasue it never feels right when I'm looking at it. But this layout feels more comfortable, so I might be more inclined to give it a go. :)

This might seem like a weird question, but, did you put anything in the CSS to cancel out the effects of the dd HTML tag? I'm trying to use it to indent a line of text in one of my entries, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Huh, that's weird. I didn't override the dd html tag at all. I did a quick test, and if you add:

.entry-content dd {margin-left: 1em !important;}

to the bottom of the stylesheet, it'll indent. (I think without changing anything else.) And of course, change the 1em if you want it to indent further.

this is the best Dreamwidth layout I've seen yet! not only is it beautifully minimalist but the coding is really clear and robust. I mucked around in it a bunch to add a header for a friend and learned a lot.

p.s. my hacked version is on my journal temporarily but the changes may make you cringe -- I don't think they're as clean.

Oooh, cool! That looks fantastic. I love the idea of moving the header to the left, and aligning the sidebar to the top.
